MuseumsArrowhead in Pittsfield is the home of Herman Melville from 1850-1863 wrote his most famous work, Moby-Dick, as well as three other novels, a collection of short stories, all of his magazine stories, and some of his poetry. Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield was founded in 1903 by Zenas Crane. His vision was to create an inviting environment for everyone, not just the elite. This vision guides the museum to this day. Bidwell House Museum in Monterey is a Georgian saltbox originally built circa 1750 and filled with antiques and surrounded by beautiful grounds and hiking trails. Clark Art Institute in Williamstown opened to public in 1955 has become one of the most beloved and respected art museums in the world, known for its intimate galleries and stunning natural environment. Colonel John Ashley House in Sheffield was the center of social, economic, and political life in Western Massachusetts in the eighteenth century. Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge is one of the oldest performing arts venues in the United States. Bartholomew's Cobble in Sheffield is a natural rock garden of ferns and rare wildflowers. A network of trails leads through forest, meadow and pastureland to the top of Hulburt's Hill with its magnificent views of the Housatonic valley. Bash Bish Falls in Mount Washington is the state's most dramatic waterfall. Cascading water tumbles through a series of gorges and finally drops 80 feet over the falls and into a sparkling pool. Monument Mountain Reservation in Great Barrington is 1,735 feet at its peak. Three miles of trails lead through the forest of white pine and oaks with tulip trees, maples, chestnut saplings and mountain laurel. Several streams wind through the forest. Mount Everett State Reservation in Mount Washington offers informal picnicking at Guilder Pond, the highest freshwater pond in Massachusetts. Tyringham Cobble in Tyringham is a two mile loop trail runs to the summit of Cobble Hill, 400 feet above the valley. Several rock outcrops offer sweeping views of Tyringham Valley with Hop Brook and the village below. |
